Glaciohydrothermal refers to the interaction between glacial systems and hydrothermal processes, where heat from geothermal sources and circulating fluids interact with glacier ice and its bed. The term encompasses the circulation of hot water and steam beneath or within ice, and the resulting physical and chemical effects on ice, bedrock, and downstream environments. It describes environments where subglacial or englacial hydrothermal circulation coexists with glacier dynamics.

Mechanisms involve subglacial hydrothermal circulation driven by magmatic heat, along with convective flow of hot water through fractures and conduits in bedrock beneath ice. Heating of meltwater can reduce ice viscosity and promote flow, while trapped steam and pressure build-up can trigger rapid release events. Hydrothermal fluids may alter surficial deposits and subglacial geology through mineral precipitation, alteration halos, and silica deposition, leaving characteristic geochemical and mineralogical signatures.

Geographic and geological settings for glaciohydrothermal activity include glacier-covered volcanic regions, notably Iceland, where subglacial volcanic complexes interact with large ice caps such as Vatnajökull. Similar systems occur wherever glaciers overlie geothermal fields or volcanic edifices, including other high-latitude regions with active volcanism or heat flow.
