Gjendens

Gjendens is a mountain lake located in the Jotunheimen mountain range in Norway. It is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the region, known for its stunning natural beauty and opportunities for outdoor recreation. The lake is situated at an elevation of 989 meters above sea level and has a length of approximately 18 kilometers. Its distinctive turquoise-blue color is a result of glacial meltwater carrying fine rock particles, known as rock flour.

The lake is a central feature of the Gjendealpene area, a popular hiking and mountaineering region. The famous Besseggen ridge hike, one of Norway's most iconic treks, offers breathtaking views of Gjendens and the adjacent, darker lake Bessvatnet. This challenging hike is a significant draw for both domestic and international tourists.

Access to Gjendens is primarily via boat from Gjendesheim or Memurubu, which are also starting points for many hiking trails. During the summer months, regular ferry services operate on the lake, facilitating access for hikers and visitors. The surrounding area provides numerous opportunities for activities such as fishing, kayaking, and camping. The dramatic scenery, including steep mountains and clear waters, makes Gjendens a quintessential Norwegian mountain landscape.
