Giostra

Giostra is an Italian term with two principal meanings in culture and sport: a medieval mounted tournament and a carousel-style amusement ride.

In the historical sense, giostre were organized in Italian city-states from the late Middle Ages through the Renaissance. One common format was the giostra dell'anello, in which riders on horseback attempted to spear small rings with a lance while moving along a circular track. Judges awarded points for speed, accuracy, and style, and rounds could eliminate competitors. The contests emphasized horsemanship, precision, and ceremonial display, and they were often part of larger civic celebrations or festivals.

In everyday language, giostra also denotes a carousel or merry-go-round. These rides feature a circular platform, carved horses or chariots, and a central rotating mechanism; passengers ride as the figures move up and down on the arms, creating a traditional fairground spectacle. The term is widely understood in Italy, though regional usage varies.

Etymology: the word giostra derives from the medieval jousting tradition, likely via French or regional Romance forms for “joust” or “joste.” The dual usage reflects the link between historical martial spectacle and later popular entertainment.

In modern times, the giostra persists as a cultural reference in festivals and tourist events; some Tuscan and Umbrian towns stage reenactments or entertainments inspired by the historical tournament, while the carousel meaning remains common at fairs.
