Ghegëria
Ghegëria is the historical and geographical region inhabited by the Gheg people, a subgroup of Albanians. It is traditionally understood as the northern part of Albania, extending into parts of Kosovo, Montenegro, and North Macedonia. The Gheg dialect of the Albanian language is spoken in this region and is distinct from the Tosk dialect spoken in the south. Historically, Ghegëria has been characterized by its mountainous terrain and a strong tribal social structure that persisted for centuries. This area played a significant role in Albanian history, particularly during the Ottoman era and the early stages of Albanian nationalism. The city of Shkodër is often considered the cultural center of Ghegëria. The geographical boundaries of Ghegëria are not strictly defined and can vary depending on historical context and interpretation, but generally encompass the areas north of the Shkumbin River. The cultural identity of the Gheg people is closely tied to their dialect, traditions, and historical experiences within this territory.
