Gewählter

Gewählter is an attributive form of the past participle from the verb wählen (to elect). In German grammar it functions as an adjective meaning “chosen” or “elected” and is used before nouns. Its form depends on gender, number, article, and case. For masculine singular nominative/accusative after an indefinite article, the form is gewählter, as in Ein gewählter Vertreter hat Stimmrecht. After a definite article, the form is gewählte: Der gewählte Vertreter hielt eine Rede. The neuter singular after a definite article is also gewählte, as in Das gewählte Amt; after an indefinite article it is gewähltes, as in Ein gewähltes Amt. Feminine forms are gewählte, as in Eine gewählte Kandidatin. In plural, with no article or after a definite article, the form becomes die gewählten Kandidaten.

Geographically or linguistically, gewählter can also appear as part of a noun phrase when capitalized, particularly in the form Der Gewählte or Die Gewählten, referring to the elected person or people. As a rule, gewählter highlights an outcome of an election rather than a general selection.

Usage notes: gewählter is distinct from gewählt (the past participle used in passive or perfect constructions, e.g., er ist gewählt) and from ausgewählt (a synonym emphasizing the act of selection). In political contexts, gewählte or Gewählter stresses the status resulting from an electoral process, while ausgewählt focuses more on the act of choosing from a set of options.
