Geske

Geske is a municipality in the district of Rendsburg-Eckernförde, in the state of Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. It is located approximately 10 kilometers northwest of Rendsburg and has a population of around 1,300 residents.

The name "Geske" is believed to have originated from the Old Norse word "geiska", which means "inhabited place beside a lake" or "clear lake". This origin reflects the geographical location of Geske, which borders on the lake called Bungsberg construction pit, previously a mining wasteland that became a lake and today an attractive natural asset.

Geske's history dates back to the 13th century. Archaeological findings suggest settlement in the area as early as the Stone Age. The presence of ancient relics and tombs underscores this fact. Historically, Geske belonged to the Hanseatic League as a member of the lively trading community in Kiel and Hamburg. The municipality suffers from the agricultural and soil conditions of northwestern Schleswig-Holstein. However, consolidation in agriculture and mechanization have helped stabilize both.

The economy of Geske primarily consists of agriculture, with livestock and crop production making up the bulk of its industries. Steps have been taken to emulate ecologically sustainable agricultural practices. Meanwhile, as part of regeneration strategies for post-mining lands there is growing inclusion of recreation, environmentalization projects and accessing exclusively privatized domains.

Tourism plays a growing role, pursuing local qualitative modest expansion in fiscal targets. Hidden from traffic density, small counties within Schleswig-Holstein participate particularly intensively in scientific projects fully avoiding over-forestation risks and even agriculture.
