Gesamtbelüftung, which translates to "overall ventilation" or "total ventilation" in English, refers to the comprehensive approach to air exchange within a building or enclosed space. It encompasses the entire system responsible for introducing fresh air and removing stale or contaminated air. This concept is crucial for maintaining healthy indoor air quality, controlling temperature and humidity, and preventing the buildup of pollutants.

A complete Gesamtbelüftung system typically involves both natural and mechanical components. Natural ventilation relies on passive methods like opening windows and doors, or utilizing architectural features such as chimneys and vents. Mechanical ventilation, on the other hand, employs fans and ductwork to actively control air flow. This can range from simple exhaust fans to complex systems like heat recovery ventilation (HRV) or energy recovery ventilation (ERV), which pre-condition incoming fresh air using the energy from outgoing exhaust air.
