GeradenParitätssystem

GeradenParitätssystem is a German term that translates to "parallel parity system" or "line parity system." It refers to a method of encoding data where a parity bit is added to a group of data bits to ensure that the total number of '1' bits in the group, including the parity bit, is either always even or always odd. This is a form of error detection rather than error correction.

In a GeradenParitätssystem, data is organized into blocks or "lines." A parity bit is calculated for each line. For an even parity system, the parity bit is set to '0' if the number of '1's in the data bits is already even, and set to '1' if the number of '1's is odd. This makes the total count of '1's in the line, including the parity bit, even. Conversely, an odd parity system ensures the total count of '1's is odd.

When data is transmitted, the receiver recalculates the parity bit for each line based on the received data bits. If the calculated parity bit matches the received parity bit, it is assumed that no single-bit error has occurred within that line. However, if the parity bits do not match, an error is detected. A significant limitation of this system is that it cannot detect errors where an even number of bits are flipped within a single line, as the parity will remain correct. It is a simple and efficient method for detecting single-bit errors in data transmission and storage.
