Georeferoituun is a Finnish term that translates to "georeferenced" in English. It describes data that has been associated with a specific geographic location. This means that the data has been assigned coordinates, typically latitude and longitude, allowing it to be placed and visualized on a map. Georeferencing is a fundamental process in many fields, including geographic information systems (GIS), remote sensing, surveying, and urban planning.

The process of georeferencing involves transforming data from a non-spatial format into a spatial one. This can be done in several ways. For raster data, such as scanned maps or aerial photographs, georeferencing typically involves identifying known ground control points (GCPs) on the image and corresponding their locations to known real-world coordinates. A transformation model is then applied to warp the image to align with these coordinates. For vector data, such as points, lines, or polygons, georeferencing might involve assigning coordinates directly to each feature or by transforming existing coordinate systems to a common geographic reference system.
