Genotyypit

Genotyypit refers to the genetic makeup of an individual organism. It encompasses the complete set of genes that an organism carries, as well as its alleles. Alleles are different versions of the same gene. For example, a gene for eye color might have alleles for brown eyes and blue eyes. The specific combination of alleles an individual possesses at each gene locus constitutes their genotype.

Genotypes are distinct from phenotypes, which are the observable physical or biochemical characteristics of an organism. While the genotype provides the blueprint for these traits, the phenotype is the result of the interaction between the genotype and environmental factors. For instance, two individuals with the genotype for tall stature might have different phenotypes if one is exposed to malnutrition during their growth.

Genotypes can be homozygous or heterozygous. A homozygous genotype means an individual has two identical alleles for a particular gene. A heterozygous genotype means an individual has two different alleles for the same gene. The inheritance of these genotypes follows Mendelian principles, where offspring receive one allele from each parent for each gene. Studying genotypes is fundamental to understanding heredity, genetic diseases, and the diversity of life.
