Genitivbildung

Genitivbildung refers to the process of forming the genitive case in German. The genitive case, often translated as "of the," indicates possession, origin, or relationship. In German, genitive formation primarily affects nouns and pronouns.

For masculine and neuter nouns in the singular, genitive is typically formed by adding an -s to the nominative form. For example, "der Mann" (the man) becomes "des Mannes" (of the man), and "das Kind" (the child) becomes "des Kindes" (of the child). This rule generally applies to all masculine and neuter nouns, regardless of their ending.

Feminine nouns in the singular and all plural nouns do not add an -s in the genitive. Instead, they are formed by adding the preposition "von" followed by the dative case. For instance, "die Frau" (the woman) becomes "der Frau" (of the woman) when preceded by "von," thus "von der Frau." Similarly, "die Kinder" (the children) becomes "der Kinder" (of the children) in the genitive construction, "von den Kindern."

Personal pronouns also have distinct genitive forms. For example, "ich" (I) becomes "meiner" (of me), "du" (you) becomes "deiner" (of you), and "er" (he) becomes "seiner" (of him). The genitive case can also be expressed using possessive determiners and pronouns derived from the genitive forms. Understanding genitivbildung is crucial for correct German grammar.
