Genitaalisyylät, also known as genital warts, are a sexually transmitted infection caused by certain strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV). These warts typically appear on the genitals, anus, and sometimes the throat or mouth. The appearance of genital warts can vary, ranging from small, flesh-colored bumps to larger, cauliflower-like growths. They can be single or multiple and may cause itching, discomfort, or bleeding in some individuals.

Transmission of genital warts occurs through direct skin-to-skin contact during sexual activity, including vaginal, anal, and oral sex. The incubation period can range from a few weeks to several months after exposure. It is important to note that HPV infection can be present even if no visible warts are present, meaning transmission can occur without the appearance of symptoms.

Diagnosis of genital warts is usually made through visual examination by a healthcare professional. In some cases, a biopsy may be performed to confirm the diagnosis. There is no cure for HPV itself, but treatments are available to remove the warts and alleviate symptoms. Treatment options include topical medications, cryotherapy (freezing), electrocautery (burning), and surgical removal. While treatments can eliminate visible warts, the virus may remain in the body, and warts can recur.

Prevention of genital warts primarily involves practicing safe sex, such as using condoms consistently and correctly. Vaccination against HPV is also a highly effective preventive measure, protecting against the most common HPV strains that cause genital warts and certain types of cancer. Regular screening for HPV and other sexually transmitted infections is recommended for sexually active individuals.
