Genetiiviof

Genetiiviof is a term occasionally encountered in discussions of grammar to denote the genitive-type construction used to mark possessive or related relations between nouns. It is not a standard label in established grammars and may be seen as a placeholder, a misspelling, or a hypothetical tag used for cross-language comparisons rather than a fixed category in a single language.

In language practice, genitive-like marking can be inflectional, analytic, or a mix of both. In inflecting languages, possession is often shown by genitive case endings on the possessor, as in Latin liber patris “the book of the father,” where patris is genitive. In German, the phrase des Mannes Buch uses a definite article in the genitive and a genitive noun: des Mannes “of the man.” In Finnish, possession is typically expressed with a genitive possessor, as in miehen kirja “the man’s book.” English primarily uses a periphrastic or possessive construction, such as the man’s book or the book of the man.

Common functions of genitive-type constructions include marking possession or ownership, expression of close association, part–whole relationships, origin or source, and various measures or quantities. Syntactically, these constructions can position the possessor before the possessed noun (pre-nominal) or use a prepositional phrase (of-phrase) depending on the language.
