Generatorius

Generatorius is the Lithuanian term for a generator, a machine that converts mechanical energy into electrical energy. Generators are used to produce electricity in power plants, as backup power supplies for buildings, and in portable tools and equipment where grid power is unavailable.

Most generators operate on electromagnetic induction: mechanical energy rotates a rotor inside or around a stator, producing an electrical current in windings. The device can be designed to output alternating current (AC) or direct current (DC); modern grid-scale machines are typically AC synchronous generators, while DC generation is produced via rectification or specialized machines.

Common types include steam-turbine generators in thermal power plants, hydroelectric generators driven by water flow, wind turbine generators with rotating blades connected to a generator, and engine-driven portable generators using internal combustion engines. Size and configuration range from compact portable units to large industrial equipment.

The term and technology emerged in the 19th century with the discovery of electromagnetic induction by Michael Faraday and the development of the dynamo. The word "generatorius" reflects the Lithuanian verb "generuoti" to generate, and the machine's role in converting energy forms.

In contemporary use, generatoriai provide backup power, support for remote locations, and essential services during outages, and are a standard component of electrical infrastructure alongside transmission grids and energy storage systems.
