Gene editing refers to laboratory techniques that enable precise, targeted changes to an organism's genome. Unlike traditional breeding or random mutagenesis, gene editing aims to insert, delete, or modify specific DNA sequences. The most widely used tools are engineered nucleases, including CRISPR-Cas systems, zinc finger nucleases (ZFNs), and transcription activator-like effector nucleases (TALENs). Newer methods such as base editing and prime editing expand the range of edits with fewer double-strand breaks.

CRISPR-Cas9 uses a guiding molecule to direct the Cas9 nuclease to a chosen DNA sequence, where a double-strand break triggers the cell's repair processes to produce targeted changes. Base editing alters individual nucleotides without cutting both DNA strands, while prime editing combines reverse transcription and CRISPR to make precise substitutions or small insertions and deletions. ZFNs and TALENs operate by engineering proteins that recognize specific DNA sites to achieve edits. Delivery approaches include viral vectors, lipid nanoparticles, electroporation, and direct delivery of protein-RNA complexes.

Applications span basic research, medicine, and agriculture. In research, editing helps illuminate gene function and model diseases. In medicine, ex vivo or in vivo approaches aim to treat genetic disorders, with several clinical trials ongoing. In agriculture, gene editing can produce crops with improved yield, disease resistance, or nutritional traits. The technology is also used in cellular therapies and diagnostic development.

Ethical and regulatory discussions emphasize safety, equity, and the implications of germline edits, which may be inherited. Off-target effects, mosaicism, and unintended consequences remain technical challenges. Regulatory frameworks vary by country; some prohibit germline editing, while others permit regulated research and clinical applications under oversight. Public engagement and transparent risk assessment are central to governance.

Despite progress, gene editing faces scientific and social challenges, including delivery efficiency, specificity, and long-term outcomes. The field continues to evolve toward greater precision and control, with ongoing debates about access, consent, ecological impact, and responsible use.
