Natural geländeeinschnitte are typically formed by geological processes such as erosion by rivers, glaciers, or wind over extended periods. These can result in valleys, ravines, or canyons. Artificial geländeeinschnitte are created intentionally by humans for various purposes.

The primary reason for creating artificial geländeeinschnitte is for infrastructure development. Transportation routes like roads, railways, and canals often require cuttings to maintain a consistent gradient or to pass through elevated terrain.
