Gelplaten

Gelplaten, also known as gelatin plates, are a printing technique that utilizes a soft, gelatinous surface to create monoprints. This method is a form of relief printing, where ink is applied to the plate, and an image is transferred to paper by pressing it against the inked surface. The gelatin used in gelplaten is typically a mixture of gelatin and water, sometimes with glycerin or other additives to achieve the desired consistency and flexibility.

The process involves preparing the gelplaten by pouring the gelatin mixture into a shallow tray and allowing it to set. Once firm, ink is applied to the surface using rollers or brushes. Artists can then manipulate the ink directly on the plate, creating textures and patterns by wiping away ink, adding more ink, or using various tools to create impressions. Paper is then carefully placed on the inked plate and pressure is applied, either by hand or using a printing press, to transfer the ink and create a unique print.

Gelplaten printing is popular for its accessibility, relative simplicity, and the ability to produce one-of-a-kind prints with a painterly quality. It allows for a great deal of spontaneity and experimentation. The soft nature of the gelatin plate means that delicate textures and subtle color variations can be captured. Each print is an original, as the ink is transferred directly from the plate without a subsequent transfer step, making it a monotype.
