Geistesgeschichte is a German term that translates to "history of the mind" or "intellectual history." It refers to a scholarly approach that seeks to understand the past by examining the prevailing ideas, beliefs, values, and intellectual currents of a particular historical period or culture. This method emphasizes the development and evolution of thought, concepts, and worldviews over time, rather than focusing solely on political events or social structures.

The Geistesgeschichte tradition, particularly prominent in German scholarship during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, often investigated the "spirit of an age" (Zeitgeist). Scholars in this field analyze texts, art, philosophy, and other cultural products to uncover the underlying intellectual framework that shaped human experience and action. It is concerned with how people understood themselves and their world, and how these understandings influenced their societies. While distinct from traditional intellectual history, which might focus on the biographies of thinkers or the chronological development of specific ideas, Geistesgeschichte aims for a more holistic understanding of the intellectual climate.
