Gegenteil

Gegenteil is a German noun meaning "opposite" or "reverse." The term derives from gegen ("against") and Teil ("part"), literally “the opposing part.” It is used to denote the state, quality, or direction that is the reverse of another, and it commonly follows das Gegenteil von (the opposite of). For example: Das Gegenteil von hell ist dunkel; Das Gegenteil von Liebe ist Hass.

In everyday language, Gegenteil describes a polarity between two concepts, objects, or properties. It covers both concrete opposites (groß vs klein) and abstract ones (möglich vs unmöglich). In many cases the opposition is symmetric, so that one term is the direct opposite of the other.

In linguistics and semantics, Gegenteil corresponds to the notion of antonymy. Antonyms can be gradable (groß–klein, schnell–langsam) or complementary (tot–lebendig). The concept is a tool for analyzing meaning relations and how speakers encode polarity, inference, and contrast in language.
