Gausów

Gausów is a Polish form associated with terms and names derived from the surname Gauss or from the Gaussian concept. In common scientific and mathematical usage, the root relates to Carl Friedrich Gauss, a foundational figure in number theory, astronomy and physics, whose name has been attached to several concepts and units.

In physics and metrology, gaus is the historical unit of magnetic flux density in the CGS Gaussian system. The plural form gausów appears in Polish when referring to multiple units or to quantities expressed in gauss in a grammatical context. The gauss is related to the tesla, with 1 tesla equal to 10,000 gauss (1 T = 10^4 G). The gauss unit is still encountered in some magnetic field measurements and in historical literature, though the SI unit tesla is standard in most modern contexts.

In statistics and probability, the term Gaussian (Polish: Gaussowy or Gaussa, depending on declension) denotes distributions and functions named after Gauss. The Gaussian distribution, or normal distribution, is central to statistical theory and data analysis. In Polish texts, references to a Gaussian distribution are often phrased as “rozkład Gaussa” or described as the normal distribution, with adjectives formed as gaussowy or gaussowskie in appropriate grammatical contexts.

In computer science and imaging, Gaussian functions underpin techniques such as Gaussian blur, which uses a Gaussian kernel to smooth images. This usage likewise traces its name to Gauss through the mathematical properties of Gaussian functions.
