Gasaustauschoberfläche refers to the area across which gases can diffuse. In biological systems, it is a critical concept for processes like respiration and photosynthesis. A large gas exchange surface allows for efficient transfer of gases between an organism and its environment. Factors influencing the effectiveness of a gas exchange surface include its area, thickness, and the presence of a moisture layer.

In terrestrial plants, the primary gas exchange surface is provided by the stomata, pores typically located on the underside of leaves. These stomata open into intercellular spaces within the leaf, creating a large internal surface area lined with moist mesophyll cells, where carbon dioxide diffuses in and oxygen diffuses out. Similarly, in animals, the lungs and gills are specialized organs designed to maximize gas exchange surface area. The alveoli in mammalian lungs and the lamellae in fish gills are intricately folded structures that significantly increase the contact area between air or water and the bloodstream.

The efficiency of gas exchange is often a limiting factor for an organism's metabolic rate. Therefore, adaptations that increase the gas exchange surface area, such as the branching of lung structures or the thinness of gill filaments, are common in many species. The maintenance of a moist surface is also crucial, as gases must dissolve in a liquid before they can diffuse across a membrane.
