Garbagefirst is a term used in some memory management contexts, particularly in older or specialized garbage collection algorithms. It refers to a strategy where the garbage collector initially focuses on reclaiming memory that is most likely to be garbage. This approach aims to quickly free up space and reduce the pause times experienced by the application.

The core idea behind garbagefirst is to prioritize scanning and collecting the youngest generations of objects. The assumption is that younger objects have a higher probability of becoming unreachable and thus eligible for collection sooner than older objects. By concentrating on these younger areas, the garbage collector can potentially achieve a significant amount of reclamation with less effort. This can lead to improved application performance by minimizing the time the application is halted for garbage collection.

While the term garbagefirst itself might not be as prevalent in modern, mainstream garbage collectors like those found in Java's HotSpot JVM or .NET CLR, the underlying principle of generational garbage collection is widely adopted. Generational collectors divide the heap into different generations, and garbage collection occurs more frequently in the younger generations. This mirrors the efficiency goal of a garbagefirst strategy. The success of such strategies relies on the "weak generational hypothesis," which states that most objects die young.
