Gangnams

Gangnams refers to a cultural phenomenon and geographical area prominently associated with the affluent district of Gangnam-gu in Seoul, South Korea. The term gained global recognition through the 2012 hit song "Gangnam Style" by Psy, which satirized the ostentatious lifestyle and consumerism associated with this upscale neighborhood. The song's catchy tune and humorous music video depicted a persona attempting to embody the perceived stylish, energetic, and wealthy image of Gangnam.

Gangnam-gu itself is known for its high-end retail stores, luxury apartments, entertainment venues, and plastic surgery clinics. It is often seen as a symbol of South Korea's rapid economic development and a hub for modern Korean culture. The "Gangnam Style" phenomenon, however, also brought attention to the potential superficiality and materialism that can be associated with such affluent areas. The term has since been used more broadly to describe a certain kind of flashy, trend-following, and often aspirational lifestyle, both within and beyond South Korea. While the song was a comedic take, it highlighted a distinct cultural identity and set of values linked to this specific urban space.
