Galerija

Galerija is a term used in several South Slavic languages to mean gallery. It refers to a space or institution for displaying visual art, such as paintings, sculptures, or photography, and also to the collection itself. In many contexts it denotes a building or part of a building designed to host exhibitions.

In architecture, galerija can mean a long passage or mezzanine, often elevated, sometimes with arches, connecting rooms or serving as a covered walkway. In theatres and churches, the term can describe a gallery or upper seating and a decorative arcade, though usage varies by language.

Art galleries may be public, private, or corporate, and focus on specific genres or artists. They host exhibitions, openings, and educational programs; sales and commissions are common in commercial galleries. Online galleries present works digitally and may facilitate viewing and purchasing remotely.

The term is used in several languages with slight spelling variants (galerija in Croatian, Slovenian, Serbian, Bosnian; galerija in Polish and some others).
