GMDSSsystemen, or the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System, is an internationally recognized automated distress alerting system. It was developed by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to enhance maritime safety and ensure that distress messages are sent and received promptly. The system relies on a combination of terrestrial and satellite-based radio communications.

The primary goal of GMDSS is to automate distress and safety alerting for mariners worldwide. It significantly improves the chances of rescue by making distress calls more efficient and reliable. Key components of GMDSS include various radio communication equipment such as VHF, MF, HF radio, and satellite communication systems like Inmarsat and Iridium.

When a distress situation occurs, GMDSS enables ships to send distress alerts automatically or manually. These alerts are then relayed to rescue coordination centers and other vessels in the vicinity. The system also incorporates features for maritime safety information (MSI) broadcasts, which include navigational warnings, meteorological forecasts, and urgent safety-related messages.

GMDSS requirements vary depending on the vessel's size, trading area, and type. Ships operating in different sea areas (A1, A2, A3, and A4) must carry specific GMDSS equipment to ensure adequate communication coverage. Training and certification for radio operators are also a crucial part of the GMDSS framework, ensuring that personnel are competent in operating the equipment and responding to distress situations. The continuous evolution of GMDSS aims to incorporate new technologies and further improve maritime safety.
