GIODO

GIODO stands for Generalny Inspektor Ochrony Danych Osobowych, the Polish supervisory authority responsible for the protection of personal data from the late 1990s until 2018. Established under the national framework for data protection, its remit covered the oversight of the processing of personal data by both public and private entities.

The office’s core functions included supervising compliance with data protection law, maintaining registers of data processing operations, handling complaints from individuals, conducting inspections, and issuing binding decisions, corrective measures, or penalties as required. It also provided guidance to organizations and public authorities and worked to raise public awareness about privacy rights. GIODO cooperated with national authorities and European bodies to implement EU data protection directives prior to GDPR.

With the entry into force of the EU General Data Protection Regulation in 2018, Poland reorganized its data protection authorities. The Generalny Inspektor Ochrony Danych Osobowych was superseded by the Office for Personal Data Protection (Urząd Ochrony Danych Osobowych, UODO), whose mandate and operations align with GDPR requirements. The transition established a new central authority to enforce data protection rules across Poland.

Today, UODO serves as the central authority for personal data protection in Poland, continuing the protective functions in accordance with GDPR and national law. GIODO remains a historical term associated with the period before 2018, when the Polish data protection framework operated under the earlier national regime.
