GEOSS

The Group on Earth Observations System of Systems, or GEOSS, is a voluntary international partnership that aims to create a global Earth observation system. It is designed to address societal challenges by providing comprehensive, coordinated, and sustained Earth observation capabilities. GEOSS connects existing and future Earth observation systems and data resources to support a wide range of applications.

The primary goal of GEOSS is to make Earth observation data more accessible and usable for decision-making in critical areas such as disaster management, climate change, energy and mineral resources, water cycle, weather, and biodiversity and ecosystem sustainability. It facilitates data sharing, interoperability, and capacity building among its member countries and participating organizations.

GEOSS is not a single, centralized system but rather a "system of systems." This means it integrates diverse Earth observation infrastructure, including satellites, ground-based sensors, and in-situ measurements, managed by different national and international entities. The GEOSS Architecture defines the framework and standards for this integration.

Established in 2005, GEOSS emerged from the need for a more coordinated and comprehensive approach to Earth observation data in response to growing global environmental and societal issues. Its development and implementation are guided by a ten-year implementation plan, which is periodically reviewed and updated. GEOSS relies on the cooperation and contributions of its member states and participating organizations to achieve its objectives.
