GDRs
The German Democratic Republic (Deutsche Demokratische Republik, GDR) was a socialist state in Central Europe that existed from 1949 to 1990. Created in the Soviet-occupied zone of postwar Germany, it bordered the Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany) to the west and shared frontiers with Poland, Czechoslovakia, and the Baltic Sea region. Its capital was East Berlin. In common usage, GDR is singular because there was a single state known by that name; the plural form is occasionally used only in historical discussions about its administrative divisions or time periods.
