The process begins with gas chromatography, where a sample is introduced into a heated column. An inert carrier gas, such as helium or nitrogen, sweeps the sample through the column. Different components of the sample interact differently with the stationary phase within the column, causing them to elute at different times. This separation is based on factors like boiling point, polarity, and molecular size.

As each separated component exits the GC column, it enters the Flame Ionization Detector (FID). In the FID, the eluent is mixed with hydrogen and air and combusted in a flame. Organic compounds, when burned in this flame, produce ions. These ions are collected by electrodes, generating an electrical current that is proportional to the amount of the organic compound present. The detector's output is then recorded as a chromatogram, a graph showing detector response versus time. Each peak on the chromatogram represents a different compound, and its area is used to determine the compound's concentration.

GC-FID is particularly effective for analyzing non-polar and weakly polar organic compounds, such as hydrocarbons, alcohols, and fatty acids. It is a robust and sensitive method, making it suitable for applications ranging from environmental monitoring and food analysis to petrochemical industry quality control and pharmaceutical research.
