Gépjármbontók are individuals or businesses in Hungary that specialize in the dismantling and recycling of end-of-life vehicles. This process is crucial for environmental protection as it ensures that hazardous materials are disposed of properly and valuable components can be recovered and reused.

The operation of a gépjármbontó is regulated by Hungarian law, requiring them to obtain specific licenses and adhere to strict environmental standards. These regulations aim to prevent pollution and ensure the safe handling of vehicle parts. Typically, a gépjármbontó will receive vehicles that are no longer roadworthy, whether due to age, damage, or obsolescence.

Upon arrival, vehicles undergo a depollution process. This involves the careful removal of fluids such as engine oil, brake fluid, coolant, and fuel, which are then collected and treated or disposed of in an environmentally sound manner. Batteries and air conditioning refrigerants are also removed and managed separately.

Following depollution, the vehicle is dismantled. Workers carefully remove reusable parts, such as engines, transmissions, body panels, and interior components, which can be refurbished and sold on the second-hand market. This practice contributes to a circular economy by extending the life of automotive components. The remaining materials, primarily metals, are then separated and sent for recycling.
