Gångsätt

Gångsätt is a Swedish term that refers to the gait or way of moving of a horse. It describes the specific pattern of footfalls and leg movements a horse uses to travel. While horses naturally possess several gaits, the term "gångsätt" often specifically refers to the unique, ambling gaits characteristic of certain breeds, particularly the Icelandic horse. These gaits are typically smoother and more comfortable for the rider than a horse's trot or gallop.

The most well-known of these gaits is the tölt. Tölt is a four-beat lateral gait where the horse always has at least two hooves on the ground, but never more than two. This results in a very smooth ride, as there is no moment of suspension. Another gait sometimes included under the umbrella of "gångsätt" is the skeed or pace, a two-beat lateral gait. However, the tölt is the most prized and recognized of the special gaits. Understanding and training a horse in these specific gaits is a significant aspect of breeds that are known for them. The term "gångsätt" encompasses the natural ability and trained performance of a horse's movement.
