Førsteordensfrigivelse, also known as first-order release, refers to a process where the rate of release of a substance is directly proportional to the amount of substance present. This is a common phenomenon in various scientific and industrial contexts. In pharmacokinetics, for instance, drug elimination often follows first-order kinetics, meaning the rate at which a drug is removed from the body is proportional to its concentration in the bloodstream. Similarly, in chemical reactions, if one reactant is present in a much larger concentration than others, or if its concentration is the sole factor limiting the reaction rate, the reaction might proceed via a first-order pathway.

This principle is also observed in the release of materials from matrices, such as in controlled-release drug delivery systems or the dissolution of soluble materials. If the surface area of the dissolving material remains constant and the concentration gradient driving dissolution is consistent, the rate of dissolution will be proportional to the amount of material remaining. The mathematical description of first-order release typically involves an exponential decay model, where the amount of substance decreases over time, but the rate of decrease slows down as the substance is depleted. Understanding first-order release is crucial for predicting the behavior of systems involving the release or depletion of substances over time and for designing processes that rely on controlled release mechanisms.
