Förtryckets, also known as "The Oppression," is a historical term used to describe the period of Swedish history from the 16th to the 18th century, characterized by the rule of the Vasa dynasty. This era was marked by significant political, economic, and social challenges that significantly impacted Sweden's development.

The Vasa dynasty, which ruled Sweden from 1523 to 1654, faced numerous internal and external threats. The dynasty's rule was marked by a series of civil wars, including the Dacke War (1542-1543) and the Torstenson War (1644-1645), which weakened the central authority and contributed to the economic decline of the country.

Economically, Sweden experienced a period of stagnation and decline during this time. The country's resources were drained by wars and the costs of maintaining the royal court, leading to a decrease in agricultural productivity and a rise in poverty among the peasantry.

Socially, the period was marked by a decline in the power of the nobility and the rise of the bourgeoisie. The peasantry, who had previously been a significant force in Swedish politics, saw their influence wane as the nobility consolidated their power.
