Fényérzékenységét, or photosensitivity, refers to an increased sensitivity to light. This condition can manifest in various ways, from mild discomfort to severe pain and visual disturbances when exposed to light. It is not a disease in itself but rather a symptom that can be associated with a range of underlying medical conditions or factors.

The causes of photosensitivity are diverse. It can be a side effect of certain medications, including antibiotics, diuretics, and retinoids. Ocular conditions such as iritis, uveitis, keratitis, conjunctivitis, and dry eye syndrome can all lead to increased light sensitivity. Migraine headaches are also frequently accompanied by photophobia. Furthermore, certain neurological conditions, including meningitis and encephalitis, can cause photosensitivity. Exposure to bright sunlight without adequate eye protection can also temporarily increase light sensitivity. In some cases, photosensitivity might be present from birth, indicating a congenital ocular issue.

The experience of photosensitivity can vary greatly among individuals. Symptoms may include eye pain, redness, watering, twitching eyelids, blurred vision, and headaches. In more severe cases, individuals may find it difficult to open their eyes in bright light and may experience nausea or dizziness.

Diagnosis typically involves a thorough medical history, a physical examination, and specific tests to identify the underlying cause. Treatment focuses on addressing the root cause of the photosensitivity. This might involve adjusting medication, treating an eye infection, managing a migraine, or other specific therapies. Lifestyle adjustments, such as wearing sunglasses outdoors, using hats, and avoiding bright or flickering lights indoors, can also help manage symptoms.
