Futou
Futou refers to a traditional Japanese hair accessory. It is a comb-like ornament, often made from wood, ivory, or tortoiseshell, that was historically worn by women to secure their hair. Futou were particularly popular during the Edo period and came in various shapes and sizes, sometimes elaborately decorated with carvings or inlay. The design of futou often reflected the prevailing hairstyles and aesthetic trends of the time. Beyond their practical function of holding hair in place, futou also served as a decorative element, adding to the overall appearance of a woman's coiffure. While their widespread use has declined with modern hairstyles and accessories, futou remain an interesting artifact of Japanese cultural history and craftsmanship, sometimes found in antique collections or modern interpretations.
