Fuktkondens

Fuktkondens is a term used in building physics and moisture management to describe condensation caused by moisture in the air condensing on cooler surfaces. It occurs when water vapor in the air reaches its saturation point on a surface whose temperature is at or below the dew point, leading to liquid droplets forming on that surface.

Fuktkondens is influenced by several factors, including indoor humidity levels, outdoor temperatures, thermal properties of buildings, and air movement. Conditions that promote it include insufficient ventilation, moisture sources (cooking, bathing, drying clothes indoors), leaks, and thermal bridges or poorly insulated surfaces that create cold spots where condensation tends to accumulate.

The effects of fuktkondens can range from minor damp patches to more serious problems such as mold growth, material deterioration (wood, drywall, insulation), corrosion of metals, and staining on interiors. If left unmanaged, it can also impact occupant comfort and indoor air quality.

Assessment typically involves measuring relative humidity, surface temperatures, and dew point, along with visual inspections and sometimes infrared thermography or hygrothermal modeling. Dew point calculations help identify surfaces at risk. Mitigation focuses on reducing moisture levels, improving ventilation, and addressing temperature differentials. Common strategies include increasing air exchange rates, using dehumidification when needed, upgrading insulation, sealing leaks and thermal bridges, and selecting materials that dry quickly or resist moisture buildup.

Fuktkondens is a common concern in climate-controlled buildings and is considered in design standards and moisture control guidelines to prevent damage and maintain healthy indoor environments.
