Fuksis

Fuksis is a term used in some Nordic countries, particularly Finland and Sweden, to refer to first-year university students. The term is often associated with the orientation period that occurs at the beginning of the academic year, known as "fuksis" or "fuksisviikot" (fuksi weeks). During this time, new students participate in various activities designed to help them adjust to university life, meet fellow students, and learn about their studies and the institution.

These activities can include guided tours of the campus, introductions to student organizations, academic guidance sessions, and social events such as parties and excursions. The purpose of the fuksis period is to foster a sense of community and belonging among new students, easing their transition into higher education. It is also a tradition for older students, often referred to as "fuksimestarit" (fuksi masters) or "tutorit" (tutors), to mentor and guide the fuksis. The fuksis experience is a significant part of the early university culture in these regions, aimed at creating a positive and supportive start to their academic journey.
