Fuglane
Fuglane (The Birds) is a novel by Tarjei Vesaas, first published in 1957. Written in Nynorsk, it is regarded as one of Vesaas’s major works and a landmark in postwar Norwegian literature. Tarjei Vesaas (1897–1978) is the author. The story is set in a small rural valley in Telemark, Norway, and centers on Mattis, a young boy who struggles with communication and social acceptance. Through Mattis’s experiences and his intimate observations of the natural world, the novel explores themes of isolation, belonging, and the fragility of human life. The title’s bird imagery serves as a motif for longing, freedom, and confinement, contrasting the perceived freedom of birds with the limits of village life and family dynamics.
