The term is not tied to a single canonical source; rather it appears in multiple works and discussions as a placeholder for study of social development, contact, and identity formation in a Bronze Age–to–early Iron Age setting.

Because fru-mu-him-nu is a constructed name, there is no official etymology. Editors and authors treat it as a composite formed from invented roots representing diverse language strata, sometimes glossing the meaning as "river people" or "people of the valley" within different texts.

Most depictions place the frumuhimnu in a river valley on a fictional continent, with a climate favorable to agriculture and metalworking.
