It plays a crucial role as an intermediate in carbohydrate metabolism, particularly in the pathway of fructose breakdown within the body. For instance, deficiencies in aldolase B enzyme activity result in hereditary fructose intolerance, a condition where the accumulation of fructose-1-phosphate causes severe hypoglycemia and liver damage after ingestion of fructose.
