Frostprotective is a term used to describe methods and measures designed to prevent frost damage to plants, crops, or other materials by reducing the likelihood of ice formation or limiting its impact. In agriculture and horticulture, frost protection is important for crops sensitive to freezing temperatures, particularly in early spring and late autumn, as frost can injure tissues, disrupt metabolism, and reduce yield or quality.

Techniques fall into several categories. Physical protection involves coverings such as row covers, horticultural fleece, blankets, or mulch. These materials insulate plants, trap heat, and create a warmer microclimate around the vegetation. Site selection and management, including sheltered locations, windbreaks, and appropriate plant spacing, can reduce frost exposure.

Water-based protection relies on the heat that is released when water freezes. Sprinkler irrigation can keep plant tissues at or near freezing by continuously applying water during a frost event, providing latent heat as ice forms. This method requires careful management to avoid overwatering and water waste.

Mechanical and energy-based methods include wind machines to mix cold air and reduce frost pockets, and heating systems or boilers used in commercial orchards and greenhouses. Greenhouses may employ supplemental heating, thermal screens, or insulated glazing to maintain a stable environment.

Monitoring and planning are integral to frost protection, with frost forecasts, temperature sensors, and alarms guiding timely deployment of measures and helping optimize energy use.

Limitations include cost, labor, and potential environmental impact, so frostprotective strategies are most effective when tailored to local climate, crop type, and growth stage.
