Fritigern
Fritigern, also rendered Frithigern, was a late 4th-century Gothic leader of the Visigoths, specifically the Thervingi branch. He is best known for guiding his people during the crisis that brought them into contact with the Roman Empire in the 370s. In 376 he led the Visigoths across the Danube seeking asylum within Roman territory, hoping to settle in the empire after decades of pressure and famine in Gothic lands. The Romans granted settlements in the provinces of Moesia and Thrace, but disputes over conditions and treatment bred dissatisfaction among the Gothic leadership and their followers.
