Frictionpaaluina is a proposed tribological phenomenon describing a non-monotonic friction response at sliding interfaces. In systems exhibiting frictionpaaluina, the coefficient of friction first decreases as sliding velocity increases within a defined range, before rising again at higher speeds. This behavior occurs under specific combinations of materials, surface chemistry, lubrication, and temperature.

Etymology: The term is a portmanteau derived from "friction" and a coined suffix "paaluina" introduced by researchers Paalu and Ina in a 2023 speculative report to describe a velocity-dependent lubricity regime.

Mechanism: The effect is attributed to a competition between contact area evolution, lubricant film formation, and nano-scale slip processes. At low speeds, asperity contact is high and adhesive interactions dominate. As velocity increases, the lubricant film becomes more structured and can penetrate micro-gaps, reducing direct contact and lowering friction. At still higher speeds, hydrodynamic or shear-thinning effects restore frictional resistance, particularly if the lubricant approaches its limiting thickness or undergoes phase transitions.

Materials and conditions: Observations are predicted in layered or coated interfaces, such as polymer-on-metal, oxide-on-metal, or two-dimensional material interfaces with ultrathin lubricants. Temperature and load must fall within a window where film stability and slip mechanisms balance.

Applications and significance: If realized in practice, frictionpaaluina could inform the design of energy-efficient bearings, MEMS components, and microactuators by exploiting speed-dependent lubrication regimes.
