Fretum
Fretum is a term with roots in Latin, meaning "strait" or "channel." Historically, it referred to narrow bodies of water connecting larger bodies of water, often used for navigation. The most famous example is Fretum Britannicum, the Latin name for the Strait of Dover, which separates England from France. Its strategic importance throughout history for trade and military movements made it a significant geographical feature.
In nautical contexts, a fretum can also describe any narrow passage where currents might be strong or
