Fresnellaitteet

Fresnellaitteet, often referred to as Fresnel devices, are a type of optical lens characterized by its unique construction. Unlike a traditional plano-convex lens which is thick and heavy, a Fresnel lens is composed of a series of concentric annular sections, each a prism. This design significantly reduces the lens's thickness and mass, making it ideal for applications where a large diameter lens is required but weight and bulk are a concern.

The concept of the Fresnel lens was first developed by French physicist Augustin-Jean Fresnel in the early 19th century for use in lighthouses. By breaking down a large lens into smaller, flatter segments, Fresnel was able to create powerful, lightweight lenses that could project a strong beam of light over long distances without the immense weight and curvature of a conventional lens of equivalent focal length.

Each annular section of a Fresnel lens is angled to refract light towards a common focal point. This stepwise approximation of a curved surface creates a planar lens with a stepped profile. While this design leads to some optical aberrations and reduced image quality compared to a simple lens, its advantages in terms of size, weight, and cost-effectiveness are considerable for specific applications.

Beyond lighthouses, Fresnel lenses are utilized in a variety of fields. They are found in overhead projectors, solar concentrators for energy generation, and even in some types of camera magnifiers. Their ability to condense light efficiently into a beam or focus it to a point, coupled with their reduced physical profile, makes them a versatile optical component.
