Frequentie counters are electronic instruments used to measure the frequency of a signal. Frequency, in this context, refers to the number of occurrences of a repeating event per unit of time. Most commonly, this applies to electrical signals where frequency is measured in Hertz (Hz), representing cycles per second.

The basic principle of operation for a frequency counter involves counting the number of cycles of an unknown input signal within a precise time interval. This time interval is typically generated by a highly stable internal oscillator, often a crystal oscillator. The input signal is fed into the counter, and its cycles are registered by a digital circuit. Once the predetermined time interval elapses, the counter displays the total number of cycles counted, which is then directly indicative of the signal's frequency.

Frequency counters are essential tools in various fields. In electronics, they are used for calibrating radio transmitters and receivers, testing audio equipment, and verifying digital circuit clock speeds. Scientists and engineers use them in research and development to analyze wave phenomena, monitor radio spectrum activity, and in metrology for precise frequency measurements. The accuracy of a frequency counter is largely determined by the stability and accuracy of its internal time base oscillator. More advanced models may incorporate features like period measurement (measuring the inverse of frequency), triggering on specific signal characteristics, and the ability to measure signal amplitude.
