Frekvenciaészlelés refers to the ability of an organism to detect and discriminate between different sound frequencies. This sensory process is crucial for a wide range of biological functions, including communication, predator avoidance, and navigation. The physical mechanism underlying frequency perception involves the auditory system, which is specialized for transforming sound waves into neural signals. In many vertebrates, this transduction occurs in the cochlea, where the basilar membrane vibrates at specific locations corresponding to different frequencies. Hair cells, located on the basilar membrane, are then stimulated by these vibrations, and their movement generates electrical signals that are transmitted to the brain via the auditory nerve. The brain then interprets these signals as specific pitches.

The range and acuity of frequency perception vary significantly across species. For example, bats and dolphins can detect ultrasonic frequencies far beyond the human hearing range, which they use for echolocation. Conversely, some animals are sensitive to infrasonic frequencies, which can be used to detect distant events like earthquakes or large animal movements. The ability to distinguish between closely spaced frequencies, known as frequency selectivity or frequency resolution, is also a critical aspect of hearing. This allows organisms to separate complex sounds, such as speech or the calls of different animals, from background noise. Impairments in frequency perception can lead to difficulties in understanding speech, recognizing important auditory cues, and can have significant impacts on an organism's survival and social interactions.
