Freelanceraajat are independent workers who offer professional services on a contract basis rather than as employees of a single organization. In Finland, the term is broadly used for people who provide digital design, programming, writing, consulting, translation, and other project‑based work. The model has grown rapidly in recent years, with many freelancers using online platforms such as Fiverr, Upwork, and local Finnish marketplaces to find clients.

Legally, freelanceraajat are considered self‑employed, and they are responsible for their own invoicing, bookkeeping, and tax reporting. Income earned must be declared as self‑employment income in the annual tax return, and freelancers must pay both income tax and social security contributions. Unlike employees, they are not covered by employment law provisions such as fixed working hours or collective bargaining agreements, but they do have certain consumer‑protection rights regarding contracts and payments.

Finland’s social security system recognizes freelancers for pension and health insurance contributions, calculated on declared income, but there are lower contribution amounts than for employees. The state has encouraged freelancing by offering tax incentives for small business­-style operations, as well as support programs and networking events managed by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment.
