FreeMind

FreeMind is a free, open-source mind-mapping software written in Java. It runs on any platform with a Java Runtime Environment, including Windows, macOS, and Linux.

Maps in FreeMind are created as hierarchical trees of nodes. Each node can contain formatted text, links, notes, and attachments; nodes can use icons, colors, and fonts; the program supports folding and expanding branches, drag-and-drop reordering, and search to navigate large maps.

Files are stored in an XML-based format with the .mm extension. FreeMind provides import and export features for several formats, including HTML and image-based outputs.

FreeMind is licensed under the GNU General Public License. It has been developed by a community of volunteers since its inception in the early 2000s. It has inspired forks and successors such as Freeplane, which continue to extend the open-source mind-mapping approach.
