Fräses

Fräses is not a standard term in modern technical vocabulary. In Swedish, the closest established terms are fräs (a milling cutter) and fräsmaskin (a milling machine), with the verb fräsa and the process fräsning. The form fräses may appear as a dialectal variant, a typographical error, or a proper noun in some texts. When referring to milling tools or machines in standard usage, it is better to use fräs, fräsmaskin, or the verb fräsa.

Milling is a subtractive manufacturing process that removes material from a workpiece using rotating cutting tools. The process can produce features such as slots, pockets, holes, profiles, and complex 3D shapes. The workpiece is clamped to a machine table or fixture, and the cutting tool is mounted in a spindle. Milling can be performed on manual machines or automated systems, and is commonly integrated with other operations in a machine shop.

Equipment and tooling common in milling include different types of milling machines, such as vertical and horizontal mills, as well as benchtop or CNC variants. Cutting tools include end mills, face mills, shell mills, ball-nose mills, and specialized cutters for pockets, slots, or threads. Materials range from various steels and aluminum to harder alloys, with carbide and high-speed steel as common tool materials. Work parameters such as spindle speed, feed rate, and depth of cut are chosen to balance material removal, surface finish, and tool life.
